The aunt of a 6-day-old Wisconsin baby who went missing Thursday was charged with kidnapping Friday hours after the boy was found.
Kayden Powell was found Friday morning in a at a gas station in Iowa, authorities said.
The boy's aunt, Kristin Smith of Denver, Colo., is accused to taking the boy from his Beloit, Wisc., home and taking him to Iowa.
Kayden was found wrapped in blankets at about 10:15 a.m. outside a gas station in West Branch, Iowa, by the police chief of the West Branch Police Department.
Beloit Police Chief Steve Kopp said the baby is in excellent health.
Smith, 31, was arrested Thursday in Iowa on a warrant from Texas. Baby clothes were found in her car, police said, but police did not say where Kayden was between the time Smith (pictured, right) was arrested and when he was found.
Multiple law enforcement agencies took part in the day-long investigation, including the Beloit Police Department, the Rock County (Wis.) Sheriff's Department, the Wisconsin Department of Justice, the FBI, the Illinois State Police, the Iowa State Patrol, and the West Branch Police Department, Kopp said.
"We never stopped worrying. We never stopped giving up hope. And it's cases like this, it's days like today that [are the reason] most of us do what we do," said G.B. Jones, the acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's office in Milwaukee.
Jones said West Branch Police Chief Mike Horihan heard the boy crying while doing a check along the interstate.
The baby's mother called 911 after waking about 4:30 a.m. Thursday to find her newborn missing from his bassinette in a room where she was sleeping at a home in the town of Beloit, which is about 20 miles north of Rockford, Ill.
Smith, who is the baby's mother's step-sister, left the home sometime Wednesday to head back to Denver.
The baby's great uncle, Mark Bennett, told NBC 5 he was also at the house when he heard his niece scream that her baby was missing.
"I've held him one time since he was born, and that was yesterday, and this morning I get up and he's gone," Bennett said.
