“Brilliant,” “Kind-Hearted” Church Victims Mourned

Friends and loved ones are remembering the nine worshippers killed when a gunman opened fire in their Bible study at a Charleston church as "brilliant" and "kind-hearted." Among the victims were four reverends, including Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church's pastor, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, whom Vice President Joe Biden remembered as "a man of service who carried forward Mother Emaunel's legacy as a sacred place promoting freedom, equality, and justice for all." Also slain were 26-year-old recent college graduate Tywanza Sanders, whose friend said he "would give you the clothes off his back," 54-year-old library manager Cheryl Hurd, 49-year-old speech therapist and girls' track coach Sharonda Coleman-Singleton and the Rev. Depayne Middleton Doctor, instrumental in providing for Charleston's poor.
