Funeral Held for Victim of Upstate Skydiving Accident

The skydiving instructor was from Brooklyn

A funeral was held Sunday for one of the men who died Friday during a skydiving accident in Ulster County.

Authorities say 42-year-old David Winokur Chappaqua and 25-year-old instructor Alexander Chulsky of Brooklyn died in the dive Friday afternoon in Plattekill. Witnesses said their parachutes malfunctioned.

The dive was organized by Skydive the Ranch in nearby Gardiner, N.Y.

Family and friends gathered Father's Day Sunday to remember Winokur, who worked in real estate and has three children.

"He was so humble. Such a nice man with so much respect for others," said the victim's uncle, Arthur Winokur.

"It's a tragedy. You could write a play about this," said his aunt, Joan Winokur. "Even Shakespeare couldn't make this up. I just want to know, 'why?'"

Winokur planned the skydiving trip to celebrate his 50th birthday.

The FAA is investigating the in-air accident.
