Rockville Centre Power Outage

It was so dark at the A&S Deli on Sunrise Highway that you could hardly make out what was on display at the counter.

A power outage left Rockville Centre residents in the dark for several hours Tuesday.

Village Police Chief Chuck Gennario says a power feeder cable burned out shortly before 11 a.m. Approximately 10,000 to 15,000 customers were left in the dark. He says most lights were back on by 2 p.m. and the rest should be back shortly.

Authorities had to make several rescues of people stuck in elevators.

Also, traffic lights were out for several hours. Police brought in extra officers to direct traffic. The Red Cross also was notified as a precaution.

No injuries were reported as a result of the outage.

The village utility is not affiliated with the Long Island Power Authority, which provides electricity
