Mother, Son Shot During Paterson Bodega Robbery

The mother and son are being treated at St. Joseph's Hospital

Police in New Jersey are looking for a suspect who shot and injured a mother and her 40-year-old son working inside a bodega.

The shooting happened around midnight Wednesday at a bodega on Broadway in Paterson, police said.

The suspect allegedly entered and announced he was robbing the store. The son began to fight the suspect, and police say the gun went off as the mother tried to help her son.

The mother was shot in the stomach and is currently undergoing surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital. Her son was shot in the leg and is also being treated at the hospital.

Family members told NBC 4 New York they rushed to the bodega from their Bronx home when they heard about the shooting.

Camilo Gonzalez, another son of the victim, was cleaning up blood from the bodega floor Wednesday morning. He said his mother called him right after the shooting.

"I feel bad what happened to my mother, I love her too much," said Gonzalez.

Police have not released the identity of the victims. The investigation is ongoing.
