Off-Duty Newark Police Officer Shoots Suspect in Attempted Car Jacking

Another suspect remains at large.

Newark police are searching for a suspect who fled the scene of an attempted car jacking of an off-duty police officer.

The officer was in his own car early Saturday morning and wearing street clothes when he was approached by two suspects.

One of the suspects pointed a gun at the off-duty officer and demanded his vehicle. The police officer then shot one of the suspects in the chest.

Both fled the scene in another vehicle and crashed into a parked car on a nearby street.

"It was a car, I guess it was stolen, and it just crashed into the SUV," witness Wendy Reed told NBC New York. "Everybody started running."

Another witness said she heard five or six shots.

The suspect who was shot was transported to University Hospital where he is treated for his wound. The officer, who was not hurt, was also taken to the hospital.

Police continue to search for the second suspect.
