Pit Bull Killed After Biting Long Island Officer

Officer say the unleashed dog charged at them as they were investigating the report of gunshots at a Roosevelt home.

Police say an officer has shot and killed a pit bull that bit a fellow officer in a bullet-strewn Long Island backyard.

Nassau County police say officers were investigating around 12:10 a.m. Sunday after gunshots rang out in a backyard on Park Avenue in Roosevelt. They say the unleashed dog charged at them and bit one of the officers multiple times in both thighs.

After the officer broke free, another officer shot the dog in the torso.

The wounded officer has been treated and released from a hospital.

Authorities say they found many .380-caliber and shotgun shell casings in the yard.
