Officials Temporarily Close 18 LI Beaches

The beaches include 14 on the north shore and four on the south shore

Officials in Nassau County have temporarily closed close to 20 beaches to swimming over bacteria concerns following heavy rain.

The beaches closed Saturday are mostly on the north shore of Long Island. They include:

Centre Island Sound
Creek Club
Lattingtown Beach
Laurel Hollow Beach
Morgan Sound
North Hempstead Beach Park
Piping Rock Beach Club
Prybil Beach
Ransom Beach
Roosevelt Beach
Sea Cliff Village Beach
Soundside Beach
Stehli Beach
Tappen Beach

Officials also closed four beaches on the south shore, including Hewlett Point Beach, Island Park Beach, Merrick Estates Vicis Association and Philip Healey Beach.

Storm water runoff after heavy rains can wash things into the water, but health authorities are especially concerned about bacteria from sewage.
