NYC Hosts Free Adoptions for 1,000 Dogs and Cats

Local shelters and rescue groups will work to find permanent homes for dogs and cats throughout the five boroughs

More than 1,000 homeless New York City pets are looking for places to live this weekend — and it's free to adopt them.

The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals said it's working with more than 65 local shelters and rescue groups to find the dogs and cats permanent owners.

The free citywide adoption event is funded by the California-based Maddie's Fund, a family foundation that supports no-kill efforts.

The group hopes to find homes for 5,000 animals nationwide on Saturday and Sunday, and has set aside $4 million to subsidize the adoptions.

The Alliance says all the pets have been spayed, neutered and vaccinated.

The two-day event has been dubbed 'Maddie's Pet Adoption Days.' Similar efforts will take place in California, Florida, Nevada and Wisconsin.
