Couple Leaving NJ Temple Struck and Killed by Car

East Brunswick police say the driver of the car was also critically injured in the accident

Authorities say a car struck a group of people leaving a service at a New Jersey temple, killing a husband and wife and injuring four others including the driver.

Police said the car hit the couple, both 51, and three other people they were walking with from Young Israel in East Brunswick on Saturday afternoon.

Police said the car crashed into a utility pole, struck the five pedestrians, then hit a guardrail. The couple died at the scene. The injured were taken to a hospital.

Police did not know the condition of a 27-year-old man.

A 52-year-old man was in stable but critical condition; his 50-year-old wife was in serious but stable condition. The car driver, a 49-year-old woman, was in stable condition.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
