Firework Blows Up in Long Island Man's Hand, Severs 2 Fingers: Police

A Long Island man lost two fingers and nearly severed another when a firework detonated in his hand Thursday evening, police say.

Suffolk County police said that the man had significant hand injuries after the mishap in front of an auto repair shop in Wyandanch. 

Authorities said that the 35-year-old man lost two fingers and a third was partially severed. A fourth finger on his right hand was also injured. 

He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip and is expected to survive his injuries.

Using or possessing fireworks -- including sparklers -- is illegal in Suffolk County.

It was not clear if the man who was hurt or anyone with him was charged with a crime.
