Port Authority police helped deliver a healthy baby girl on the PATH train station concourse at the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan Tuesday morning, the agency said after Gov. Cuomo announced the heroic effort on Twitter.
"It's an experience I will never forget," the officer, Brian McGraw, told NBC 4 New York Tuesday.
Port Authority police responded to a call of a pregnant, full-term woman in labor on platform B at the transportation hub at about 2:30 a.m., according to the agency. The woman was with her husband and 2-year-old son and had been heading to a hospital for delivery when she felt the baby coming.
"The woman was on the ground in extreme pain, said she was full-term, ready to give birth," said McGraw.
McGraw, who used to work in Jersey City as an EMT, examined the woman, determined the birth was imminent and prepared the area for birth. Within minutes, the woman delivered a healthy 6-pound, 14-oz baby girl, Asenat Abdrabo.
"They were happy, they were thankful," said McGraw.
Abdrabo, the first child to be born at the World Trade Center since before the Sept. 11 attacks, is the second baby McGraw has delivered, the Port Authority said.
"I will always remember August 4, and maybe we will run into each other down the line and see each other," he said.
