Work Halts on Upstate NY Bridge After 2nd Accident in Month

A worker was injured this week working in a containment area, and two nearly fell at the bridge last month

A repainting project on a state-operated bridge over the Hudson River has been suspended after a worker was injured in the second accident on the span in less than a month.

The spokesman for the New York State Bridge Authority says work on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge was halted after Thursday morning's accident.

He says 46-year-old Renato Amaral of Newark, N.J., was injured while working in the containment area underneath the bridge deck.

The containment system is a plastic-enclosed device used to prevent paint chips from falling into the river.

Amaral was flowed to Westchester Medical Center. Information on his condition isn't immediately available.

The work will resume in a few days after a safety review by the contractor.

Safety harnesses kept two workers from harm in a fall at the bridge on May 21.
