Ex-Cashier at Popular NYC Chain Eatery Sentenced in Credit Card Theft Scheme: DA

A cashier at a popular chain eatery in Manhattan has been sentenced to prison after she admitted stealing credit card information of dozens of customers last summer and going on a $20,000 shopping spree at luxury retail stores.

Aida Matias, 23, of the Bronx, was sentenced to 1 to 3 years in state prison Wednesday after pleading guilty in February to theft, forgery, grand larceny and other charges.

Matias was working at Le Pain Quotidien in SoHo from July through September of 2016 when she used a handheld skimming device to steal credit card information from more than 70 customers, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said.

When she was arrested, she had more than 15 forged credit cards in her possession, some encoded with the stolen data, Vance said. A search warrant later executed at her apartment turned up more forged cards, forgery devices and a fake New York state ID card.

Prosecutors say she used the cards to go shopping at Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale's, Louis Vuitton and other luxury department stores and retailers. She also reserved a premium hotel suite in Manhattan last December.

Vance urged New Yorkers to monitor their own financial statements closely for signs of fraud.
