Woman Injured, Criminally Charged After Drag-Race Crash: Police

A 19-year-old woman was hospitalized Sunday with a severe head injury after crashing her car while racing with another vehicle on Long Island, police say.

Cristela Umana-Herrera, of Copiague, was racing another vehicle in Hempstead at about 3:45 a.m., when she lost control of her 1993 Acura and struck a utility pole, Nassau County investigators said.

Two passengers in her car, a 29-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, were taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries that police say weren't life-threatening.

The vehicle she was racing drove away after the accident, police said.

Herrera is being charged with third-degree assault, two counts of second-degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and several motor vehicle violations, police said.

There was no information indicating she had obtained a lawyer who could comment on the charges.
