A man was arrested in connection with the death of his 82-year-old great-grandmother and assault on his mother, police said Saturday.

Both women were bound with tape in an East Village apartment Friday evening, but the younger woman was able to free herself and call police.

Gary Bias was arrested on charges of second-degree murder and attempted murder.

It wasn't immediately clear if he had a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.

Officers responded to a 911 call shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Lillian Wald Houses in the East Village and found Ella-Nae Biaz with her wrists and ankles bound with tape.

She was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

Bias' 39-year-old mother was treated at Bellevue Hospital for her injuries.
