Brooklyn Woman Arrested for DWI Dies in Staten Island Police Holding Cell: NYPD

A woman has died in an NYPD holding cell after she was arrested for driving while impaired by drugs, authorities say.

Police say 34-year-old Nicole Garbellotto was arrested by Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority officers on Thursday at approximately 4:35 a.m. for driving while impaired and operating a vehicle while impaired by drugs.

Garbellotto was found slumped behind the wheel of her car at the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge toll, according to authorities. Anti-overdose medication was administered and she was taken to Staten Island Hospital North for evaluation.

After treatment, she was released and taken to the Staten Island police station. Garbellotto was placed in a holding cell, where she was later found unconscious, police said.

Emergency services responded and pronounced her dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing, and the exact cause of death will be deterimined by a medical examiner.
