Woman, 64, Killed in Long Island House Fire: Police

A 64-year-old woman was killed in a house fire on Long Island after she went inside her home, possibly to rescue two cats, officials say.

Authorities responded to the flaming Theron Place home in Northport shortly before 8 a.m. Friday.

Suffolk County Police say Ellen Carberry and her son John Carberry, 30, were able to get out of the home, but the mother went back into the house, possibly to rescue their cats, and was overcome by the fire.

Ellen Carberry was pronounced dead at the scene. John Carberry was uninjured.

Police homicide and arson detectives are investigating the cause of the fire, but say it appears to be accidental.
