At least one person has died and nearly two dozen were hurt when a wrong-way driver slammed into a crowd of pedestrians in Times Square Thursday.
Early indications from law enforcement sources are that the incident is an isolated one and not connected to terrorism. Even so, with a recent history of deadly car-versus-pedestrian terror incidents around the world, the initial law enforcement response was intense, perhaps fearing the worst.
Widespread road closures were in effect as a result:
- West 42nd Street is closed from 1st Avenue to 9th Avenue in both directions
- West 43rd-49th Streets are closed from 6th Avenue to 8th Avenue in both directions
- The 23rd Street exit is closed on the northbound FDR Drive
- The 42nd Street exit is closed in both directions on the FDR Drive
