White Swan Found With Apparent Chemical Burns to the Face in New Jersey

A white swan is recovering in southern New Jersey after the bird suffered what appear to be chemical burns to its head.

Officials say several joggers found the swan Tuesday afternoon at Parvin State Park in Pittsgrove.

Wildlife rehabilitator Victoria Schmidt tells the Daily Journal that it appears the chemicals were thrown on the animal. But they aren't certain if the swan was deliberately burned.

The nature of the chemical wasn't clear.

A spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection says they've increased security at the park as a precaution.

Authorities say the male swan is in stable condition. It's being treated with antibiotics and nutrients.
