Ambulette Passenger Killed in West Nyack Crash: Police

An ambulette passenger was killed in West Nyack Thursday when a para-transit bus collided with the vehicle near the Palisades Center Mall, police say.

The para-transit bus, operated by Brega Transport, collided with the ambulette, operated by V.I.P. and associated with the Friendship Adult Day Care Center, on Route 303 Thursday afternoon, according to police.

Police said the ambulette was making a right turn onto Route 303 when the southbound bus crashed into it.

Guenther Rieder was across the street when he heard the impact.

"It sounded like a very loud crash," he said. "From what I could tell, the bus was going very fast."

"It looked like the bus was basically dragging, pushing the ambulette all the way for about 100 feet down the street," he said.

The only passenger in the ambulette, a 48-year-old man, was pronounced dead at Nyack Hospital. Four others were seriously injured, including both drivers.

Chopper 4 over the scene showed the severely mangled vehicles on the road immediately after the crash.

The intersection of Palisades Center Drive North and Route 303 was closed to southbound traffic. Clarkstown police said they want to speak with witnesses about the accident.
