Vehicular homicide charges have been filed against a northern New Jersey man following a head-on crash that left his infant niece dead.

Thirty-year-old Rasmesh Murugesapillal of Guttenberg also faces charges of assault by auto and child endangerment stemming from Saturday night's crash in West New York.

Police say Murugesapillal had six other passengers in his car when he veered into oncoming traffic around 9:30 p.m. and collided head-on with another vehicle. One of the passengers was holding the 1-year-old girl, who was not restrained.

Authorities initially believed the child had a possible skull fracture and took her to a hospital. But she was soon flown to another hospital, where she was pronounced dead around 2 a.m. Sunday.

It was not known Sunday afternoon if Murugesapillal had retained an attorney.
