No. 1 Reason to Be Thankful It's Baseball's Opening Day in the Bronx

The aroma of popcorn and hot dogs at Yankee Stadium Monday is a welcome sign that spring is finally here, following a punishing winter that broke several daily records in snowfall and cold.

On April 6, the average high in New York City is in the upper 50s. Opening Day more times than not is brisk, breezy and cool. Monday is Opening Day for the Yankees and the weather couldn't cooperate any better.

Temperatures climbed above 60 degrees under mostly sunny skies -- a warmer-than-average April 6 for the city.

The Yankees have experienced a wide variety of weather on Opening Day. Temperatures have ranged from 35 degrees to as warm as 75 degrees -- a huge spread. On April 6, 1982, the Opening Day game had to be postponed when near blizzard conditions dropped 10 inches of snow on New York City. The game was played five days later.

It snowed on Opening Day in 1996 but play was not disrupted. Continuous wet snow fell throughout the game with the temperature staying in the 30s.

April is also known for its showers, of course. A soaking, chilly rain put a spoiler on Opening Day in 1999. The game needed to be called after seven innings -- all the more reason to enjoy Monday's mild temperature of 64 degrees in the Bronx. Play ball!
