After a rude winter, tri-state residents were rewarded Wednesday with the highest temperatures in three months -- a sign of warmth to come with spring nine days away.
Temperatures climbed to 59 degrees in midtown under sunny skies and hit 62 degrees in Newark, New Jersey, highs not seen since Christmas Day.
Fog clouded the skies early but burned off throughout the morning, paving the way for climbing temperatures under ever increasing amounts of sunshine.
Wednesday's high of 59 degrees in midtown didn't break any records; the warmest daily high recorded for March 11 was 73 in 1977. But the relative warmth was a welcome respite for the city, which has seen 47 consecutive days with at least 1 inch of snow on the ground in Central Park.
The mercury falls a bit Thursday, with Storm Team 4 projecting high temperatures around 48 under mostly sunny skies. Temperatures will stay in the mid-to-high 40s through Sunday before bouncing up to 50 degrees on Monday, Storm Team 4 says.
Rain may cloud weekend plans, though. A steady rain is expected to develop late Friday and continue through the day Saturday, causing localized flooding in spots already saturated by water from melting snow and ice.
