Fire at L.I. Substation Causes Power Outage

Power was later restored to all customers

Thousands of people lost power on Long Island Friday afternoon after a fire at an electrical substation.

The Long Island Power Authority said nearly 14,000 customers were affected in the area of Wantagh and North Bellmore.

Officials tell NBC 4 New York that the fire at the substation in East Meadow erupted just after 3 p.m. and spread to a holding tank that contained 5,000 of flammable liquid.

The fire was so intense that firefighters evacuated homes around the substation. The fire was extinguished in about an hour and there were no injuries.

Power was restored to all customers by 4:10 p.m., LIPA said.
