Several Exotic Pets Die After Pipe Bursts at Upper West Side Veterinary Clinic

An Upper West Side veterinary hospital said that several exotic pets died after a hot water pipe burst.

The Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine on West 87th Street said on its Facebook page that the clinic had to be closed after the pipe burst Monday morning. Some of the animals at the center didn’t survive, but several others survived.

“Words cannot begin to express the devastation we feel,” the center said. “The hospital has not only suffered the loss of patients, but also severe damage that will cause our closure until further notice.”

It’s not clear if Monday's frigid weather contributed to the burst pipe. It's not immediately clear which kinds of animals died.

The Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine exclusively treats birds, reptiles, amphibians, birds and other exotic pets.

According to its website, the center is the only such veterinary hospital in New York City.
