Vanessa Hudgens-Led “Gigi” Says Au Revoir to Broadway

After a rousing performance on Sunday’s Tony Awards, the Vanessa Hudgens-led revival of “Gigi” will play its final performance at Broadway’s Neil Simon Theatre on June 21.

At the time of its closing, “Gigi” will have played 20 previews and 86 regular performances.

“Gigi” was shut out of any Tony wins this year, with only one nomination for featured actress Victoria Clark. The show has been down at the box office according to numbers reported by The Broadway League, playing to a 48 percent capacity last week and taking in only $401,946, or 30 percent of its potential $1,345,280 gross.

A new adaptation of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s Oscar and Tony-winning musical comedy, “Gigi” features a new book by “Call the Midwife” screenwriter Heidi Thomas. Direction comes from Eric Schaeffer (“Follies”), with choreography from Emmy winner Joshua Bergasse (“On the Town,” NBC’s “Smash”).

The Broadway revival also featured four Lerner and Loewe songs written and added to the score in 1973, as well as a few songs from the 1958 Oscar-winning film.

"Gigi" marked the Broadway debut of Vanessa Hudgens ("The Bling Ring"), who polished her songbird chops on the small and big screen in the "High School Musical" franchise.
