2 Killed When Van Overturns on Garden State Parkway: Police

A van carrying 14 people crashed and rolled over on a rain-slicked Garden State Parkway Friday night, killing two New Jersey residents, state police say.

The accident occurred in Holmdel, near mile post 117, at about 7:30 p.m., police said. One person was thrown from the van.

Esperanza Guardado, of Elizabeth, and Charles Derosier, of East Orange, died in the crash, investigators said Saturday.

One of the victims had to be airlifted to the hospital, and troopers had to clear traffic on the highway to make way for a Medivac landing pad.

Most of the others who were injured were taken to Bayshore Hospital.

It's not clear what caused the van to crash, or where it was headed. Police said it was coming from South Jersey.

No children were in the van.

Police said roads were wet at the time of the crash, though it's not clear if it was raining at the time of the accident.

The crash snarled holiday rush-hour traffic for hours.
