Upper West Side Robbery, Stabbing Suspect Arrested, Linked to 4 Other Incidents: NYPD

Police say they've arrested a suspect in the robbery and stabbing of a man walking on the Upper West Side late Thursday afternoon.

The suspect was initially arrested in a separate robbery on the subway in the Bronx early Friday morning, police said. In that case, he approached a 25-year-old man on the platform of the no. 2 train at 96th Street at about 2 a.m., showed a boxcutter and mugged him before running away.

Police apprehended the suspect at 149th Street and Grand Concourse at about 4 a.m., and after the victim positively identified him, arrested him on robbery, weapons and marijuana possession.

While the suspect, Rondell Smith, was in custody, police linked him to the Upper West Side mugging and stabbing the night before. The victim in that case was also able to positively identify him, and Smith was charged with second-degree robbery.

Since then, Smith has been linked to three additional robberies or menacing incidents on the Upper West Side this week. Police said he showed a gun to a 70-year-old man walking his dogs on West 90th Street; mugged a 13-year-old boy at knifepoint on West 89th Street; and threatened and robbed a 34-year-old man on Broadway.

Smith has been charged with robbery and menacing in the incidents.

Attorney information wasn't immediately clear.
