Unwrap the Winner of NYC Condom Contest

New York City has got the power -- as in the start-button design on the winning special limited-edition NYC Condom.

Luis Acosta, 29, of Kew Gardens, Queens won the NYC Condom Package Design Contest, garnering 23 percent of the 15,000 online votes on the NYC Condom Facebook page and the Health Department's website.

Acosta's design, which will be used this fall, symbolizes New Yorkers taking control and practicing safer sex.

“The NYC Condom program is doing all of New York City a great service, and I’m very excited to be a part of it,” Acosta said. “I hope my package design reminds people that they’re in control. We all have the power to protect ourselves from sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS and unplanned pregnancies.”

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene launched the contest last December, receiving 600 submissions from all over the five boroughs, other states, and countries, before a panel of judges narrowed it down to Acosta and four other finalists in February.

The NYC Condom is a free lubricated Lifestyles condom that is given out across the city at clinics, bars, gyms, and fine establishments.
