Long Island Man Accused of Shooting Acquaintance to Death With Shotgun: Police

A Long Island man is facing murder charges after authorities allege he fired shotgun blasts into an acquaintance's head and back amid an ongoing argument.

Joel Deras, 35, was arrested Wednesday in connection to the shooting death of German Ismael Saravia Melendez, 37, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

Authorities say that the two knew each other and had been locked in some sort of ongoing dispute when Deras allegedly went to Melendez's Uniondale home on Monday night and shot him with a shotgun.

At least one blast was heard by neighbors as well as the police department's gunshot detection system. Authorities responded to the home and saw Deras' car leaving the scene.

Cops say they pulled the car over, finding Deras and several weapons -- including the shotgun thought to be used in the slaying -- inside the vehicle.

Deras was set to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Hempstead.

Attorney information for the man wasn't immediately available.
