Prosecutor: NJ Man Bound Elderly Mother to Chair

Peter Schnabel of Union City allegedly used shoelaces to tie his mother to a recliner

Elderly neglect charges have been filed against a New Jersey man after his 91-year-old mother was found dead in their living room.

Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Guy Gregory tells The Jersey Journal that 56-year-old Peter Schnabel of Union City allegedly used shoelaces to tie his mother to a recliner while he worked overnight.

Police found Mildred Schnabel's body when they responded to a 911 call at the family's home Saturday morning. Gregory says Peter Schnabel, who was his mother's caretaker, apparently wanted to secure her to the chair so she wouldn't fall.

Schnabel found his mother slumped in the chair when he returned home. He removed her from the chair and tried to revive her before calling 911.

It wasn't clear Sunday if Schnabel had retained an attorney.
