Authorities on Long Island rescued more than two dozen dachshunds from "deplorable conditions" in a house that's being condemned.
The dogs were discovered Saturday by Suffolk County police and firefighters responding to a report of a fire at the house in Hauppauge. The fire had been extinguished before they arrived.
Many of the dogs were dehydrated and covered in feces and urine, said Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Some of the dogs had lice and eye sores, he added.
John Lowery, 57, the resident, was charged with multiple misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. There was no indication that he had obtained a lawyer to speak in his behalf.
Several of the dogs were taken to emergency veterinary clinics.
