Two Dead in Newark Car Crash

The car was speeding on the Garden State Parkway before the crash.

Two men were killed when a high-speed police chase on the Garden State Parkway ended with a fiery crash in Newark, N.J.

New Jersey State Police pursued the 1996 Acura for speeding, but then broke the pursuit once the car exited the parkway.

The driver, who authorities identified as Zafir Abdul Rahman, 24, of East Orange, then continued at a high-speed down 15th Avenue in Newark.

The car struck one moving vehicle and three parked cars before it burst into flames and flipped over.

Rahman was thrown from the vehicle. He and his passenger, who was not immediately identified, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the first car hit, a female, was taken to University Hospital with minor injuries.

Chief of Detectives Anthony Ambrose said that it does not immediately appear the State Police were pursuing the vehicle at the time of the collision.

The investigation is ongoing.
