Gluten-Free Turkey Meatballs Recalled in New Jersey Over Misbranding

A New Jersey company is recalling nearly 200 pounds of turkey meatball products that were labeled "gluten-free" but had gluten in excess of the recommended amount for such branding.

Joseph Epstein Food Enterprises, an East Rutherford company, shipped the Mama Mancini's gluten-free turkey meatballs to retail locations in New Jersey. They were produced Oct. 19.

The problem was discovered during third party laboratory testing, authorities said. The company notified the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service of the issue.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions related to the products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact his or her healthcare provider.

Shoppers who have bought the products are urged not to consume them. They should be tossed out or returned to the place of purchase.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact Matt Brown, president of Joseph Epstein Food Enterprises, at (917) 705-7514.
