Tree Falls on Campers in Tent, Kills Man

A sycamore tree fell on two people in a New Jersey campsite early Tuesday, killing one man and injuring his wife.

The tree, which is estimated to weigh several thousand pounds, fell on the couple as they lay in their tent at the Bull's Island Recreation Area, a state park in Hunterdon County.

A camper from a nearby campsite, Kenny Tu, heard screams and ran over with a group of 15 others, according to nj.com.

They soon discovered a 46-year-old man and 42-year-old woman trapped underneath the tree and contacted authorities.

“The whole tree covered him up. We couldn’t even see him,” Tu told nj.com.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene while the woman was flown to a hospital, where she is in guarded condition.

The group also found the couple’s 10-year-old son, 12-year-old daughter and 9-year-old nephew, who were not injured.
