Ex Transit Chief Accused of Bilking 2 NJ Schools Out of Nearly $600K

Thirty-nine-year-old Michelle Pumilia of Union Beach and her 68-year-old mother, Virginia Lisay, are charged with second-degree theft

Authorities have accused the former transportation manager for two New Jersey school districts and her mother of bilking the districts out of nearly $566,000.

Thirty-nine-year-old Michelle Pumilia of Union Beach and her 68-year-old mother, Virginia Lisay, are charged with second-degree theft.

Pumilia worked as transportation manager for Hazlet schools from 2005 through 2008. She was transportation supervisor for the Piscataway School District from September 2008 until June 2012

State prosecutors allege Pumilia created a fictitious bus company and billed the districts for services. Her mother is accused of endorsing many of the checks.

A Piscataway employee alerted authorities after finding the suspicious invoices.

Pumilia and her mother have been released without bond. It's not known if they've hired lawyers.
