Subway Service Resumes Monday Morning

After historic MTA suspension in response to Irene threat, subway service to resume

Subway service will begin Monday morning, but passengers should expect delayed service and more crowded trains, the MTA said.

“We still have a lot of work to do in parts of our 5,000-mile territory that were hit extremely hard by the storm, but we can now see very visible progress," said MTA chair Jay Walder.

Some MTA buses were already in service by 5 p.m. Sunday. Service was to be restored first in Manhattan and the Bronx, followed by Queens and Brooklyn.

Since the beginning of the Irene shutdown, the MTA has said to expect diminished capacity for the Monday morning commute. That hasn't changed, and Walder said he could not guess when the system -- which carries 5 million riders on an average weekday -- would be back to normal.

"I think it's fair to say you're going to have a tough commute in the morning," Mayor Bloomberg said.

Taxis will continue to operate on a zone fare system until the subway system is back. For fare information, check out this zone fare map.

The PATH train service is expected to resume by 4 a.m. Monday morning.

Metro-North and New Jersey Transit service suspensions will continue Monday.

Metro-North riders might see many difficult mornings. Walder said that commuter line was by far the worst-hit, with substantial flooding on every line, power outages affecting signals and erosion of the tracks.

"This may continue for some time," Walder said.

The New Jersey Transit has only resumed severely modified service (see below).

The LIRR remains suspended and is also facing a cleanup, with downed trees in numerous areas.

Amtrak has resumed service, but with several cancellations.

Kennedy and Newark airports will open for arrivals at 6 a.m., and departures will start at noon. The JFK AirTrain returns to service at 4 a.m., and Newark AirTran returns to service at 6 a.m. LaGuardia Airport re-opens to both departures and arrivals at 7 a.m.

NYC SUBWAYS

Service will resume across the subway system at 6 a.m. Monday. Service will be less frequent than normal, and customers should expect longer waits and more crowded trains. Frequency of trains will improve over the course of the day.

LIRR

  • Long Island Rail Road service will see "significant restoration" to many of its lines Monday, a Cuomo aide said Sunday night. Until then, it remains suspended while crews make restoration efforts following Irene. Trees are blocking tracks and flooding has been reported in several areas. The agency says hundreds of employees are working around the clock to assess damage and make repairs. LIRR will restore service when it is safe and possible to do so.
