Grinch Pilfers Toys for Tots Bin in Westchester: Police

Authorities are looking for the thieves they said emptied a bin full of toys for needy children in Westchester County on Tuesday, making off with radio-controlled cars, board games and a variety of stuffed animals.

The Toys for Tots bin outside the William Raveis Real Estate office in Rye was almost full around 2 p.m. Tuesday. By 5 p.m., according to broker Marilyn Hoffman, the toys were gone and the bin empty.

Hoffman said this is the fourth year her office has had a toy bin outside. But she wasn't hoping to prosecute the thief.

"It's not the season for that," she said. "Ideally, maybe, I'd like to think it was someone truly in need"

Police said that they were canvassing the area for surveillance footage that might show the thieves. They added that the business might've had some toys stolen over the weekend but chose not to report the thefts until all of the items were stolen.

Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps and serves communities across the country. In 2015, the charity distributed more than 18 million toys to 7 million children.

Anyone with information about the thieves should call the Rye Police department at 914-967-1234.
