A tow truck hit three vehicles and plowed through a building when it lost its brakes on a busy street in West Orange, N.J. Wednesday afternoon.
The truck's brakes failed somewhere on Eagle Rock Avenue after 2 p.m., and it a hit postal truck on the corner of Main Street and Harrison Street, police said. The driver managed to swerve around traffic as the truck proceeded down the street, though it couldn't avoid hitting two other vehicles.
The tow truck barreled toward Main and Washington streets, then crashed into a building, going straight through a tailor shop and into a second business, a communications store, according to police.
The truck finally came to a rest by a school, which was empty because of the holiday.
The driver of truck was injured, as well as someone who was inside one of the stores. Both injuries were described as minor.
The building was evacuated due to concerns over structural integrity.
Investigators are looking into whether a mechanical failure or a driver's error is to blame.
