What to Know
- Powerful storms delivered hail and heavy winds across the tri-state amid a tornado watch Friday
- Trees were downed and streets were flooded across the area
- The worst of the storms is over, and a beautiful holiday weekend is ahead
Powerful storms swept into the region Friday afternoon as much of the tri-state, including all of New York City, was placed under a tornado watch into the night.
The National Weather Service watch -- which covered all of the five boroughs, large swaths of upstate New York and the Hudson Valley and parts of Connecticut and New Jersey -- expired at 10 p.m., and the last of the storms were expected to clear out by midnight.
Hail and heavy rain pummeled all areas of the tri-state during isolated showers through the afternoon and evening. New Jersey especially saw heavy flooding and downed trees from the storms.

The storm impacted air travel, with each of the region's major airports seeing delays throughout the day. The rain mucked up travel along major roadways.
Several fireworks displays planned for Friday night were also canceled ahead of the severe weather.
Skies will begin to clear early Saturday, giving way to a beautiful Independence Day weekend.
