Sandy Hits Tri-State: The tri-state area experienced unprecedented destruction when Sandy slammed into the region on Oct. 29, making landfall in Atlantic City, N.J., as a post-tropical cyclone with hurricane-force winds. The storm claimed more than 60 lives in the tri-state area, including 41 in New York City, where its massive storm surge destroyed homes along the coast, flooded streets, tunnels and subway lines and caused power outages. Many hard-hit areas were in the dark for more than a month. Tri-state governors requested more than $69 billion in federal aid to support recovery efforts.
