L.I. Toddler Dies After Fence Beach Accident

The boy was playing near the fence when it fell on him

Police on Long Island say an 18-month-old boy has died in an unusual accident at a beach.

A section of unattached chain link fence fell on the boy Monday afternoon while he was playing at Ransom Beach in Bayville.

The toddler was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead early Tuesday.

Police identified the child as Phillip Amico.

Ransom Beach is a park operated by the town of Oyster Bay. Town Supervisor John Venditto said in a statement that officials are cooperating with the police investigation.

He said the fence was part of a recent construction project. He said officials are trying to determine why it was left at that location.
