Lantern, Mistaken for Grenade, Causes Scare at Times Square Subway Station

Trains bypassed a Times Square subway station for more than an hour Monday because a Chinese lantern on the tracks was mistaken for a grenade, according to a law enforcement official.

Police were at the 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue station from about 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. after the object was spotted. The station was evacuated as officers investigated.

Service was later restored after the battery-operated lantern was deemed safe.
