3 Killed in Newark in 1 Day: Prosecutor

Three men were killed in separate incidents in Newark Wednesday, the prosecutor's office said.

A 32-year-old man, identified as Andre Singh, died in a shooting that wounded another man on the 300 block of Sanford Avenue just after midnight, according to the Essex County prosecutor's office.

About an hour later, another man was shot on the 200 block of Ridgewood Avenue.

And just after 3 p.m., a man was fatally stabbed during an apparent burglary on the 100 block of Van Buren.

No suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made in the killings. The prosecutor's office said it's investigating.

A Wall Street Journal article published the same day noted a "surge" in shootings in New Jersey's largest city, citing 161 shooting incidents as of Aug. 9, compared with 111 during the same period last year.

Mayor Ras Baraka responded in a statement: "While it is true that there has been a spike in shootings this year, the story does not emphasize that it is only an increase of three fatal shootings (7.3 percent)."

Baraka acknowleged the city was struggling to reduce crime with a smaller police force and fewer resources from county, state and federal law enforcement.

Forty percent of New Jersey's gun crimes happen in Essex County, officials said Tuesday while announcing 40 sheriff's deputies in the county will be equipped with body cameras.
