3rd Long Island High School Student Diagnosed With MRSA

Three Rocky Point High School students on Long Island have now been diagnosed with the bacterial infection known as MRSA.

During the school's winter recess, parents and staff were informed that two students who played on the same sports team at the high school had been diagnosed with the infection.

On Tuesday, the school district's superintendent sent out another letter announcing that a third student who also played on that sports team had MRSA.

According to the letter, the student had not been involved in any team activities since before the break.

"We take MRSA very seriously as the health and welfare of our students, staff and visitors is our top priority," said Superintendent Michael F. Ring, who added that the school had taken measures to sanitize the building with disinfectants. "We are following recommendations published by the CDC and have intensified our level of awareness."

As the school district attempts to track any possible spreading of the illness, parents are asked to inform the school's nurse if their child is diagnosed with MRSA.

MRSA is a staph bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics. It can be transmitted by skin-to-skin contact, or sharing towels.
