Misguided Thief Swipes GPS from L.I. Top Cop

Police on Long Island searching for GPS device

Officials are trying to track down the thief who stole a GPS device from one of Long Island's top cops.

Suffolk County police Commissioner Richard Dormer's county-owned SUV was parked at his Northport home when someone smashed through the window and took off with the device. The break-in likely happened in the early morning or late night hours of March 15.

Newsday reports Dormer said last week he had informed someone at headquarters about larceny one or two days after the incident, that person then reported the crime.

The vehicle's damage totals nearly $250 and the GPS was valued at around $300.

Police are handling the theft as a misdemeanor.
