A Maryland man who allegedly traveled overseas to fight alongside terrorists has been flown back to New York to face terror charges.

NBC New York has learned that a man known as Malik Jones -- but who also has several aliases --could appear in a New York courtroom as early as Monday afternoon.

Law enforcement sources said Jones traveled overseas to join al-Shabaab, a jihadist terrorist organization based in East Africa. Al-Shabaab has pledged allegiance to al-Qaida and has committed murderous attacks across that region.

Jones traveled through John F. Kennedy International Airport several years ago on his way to join the violent extremist group, law enforcement sources said. He is one of about 40 Americans believed to have been recruited by that terror organization since 2007.

He was taken into custody late last year in Africa and was flown to the U.S. in December, sources said.

Assistant Attorney General John Carlin said in a statement, "The National Security Division's highest priority is counterterrorism and we will continue to hold accountable those who seek to provide material support to terrorists."
