A 14-year-old girl has been charged with making a terroristic threat against her Bergen County high school on Facebook, police say.
The teenager allegedly posted a message asking for help to attack Ramapo High School, a regional high school that encompasses the Franklin Lakes and Wyckoff districts.
The girl’s name has not been released because she is a minor, but she is a freshman at the school, police tell NBC New York.
Sources tell NBC New York someone noticed the alleged threat on the girl's Facebook page and told a teacher, who contacted authorities. The teenager was arrested Tuesday at her home in Wyckoff and charged with one count of making a terroristic threat. She will be charged as a juvenile, officials said.
Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox said authorities took her post seriously.
"The investigation turned toward a terrorist threat charge because it said, 'I'm going to launch a terrorist attack on Ramapo High School. Hit me up if you want to join me,'" Fox said. "That comment is a terroristic threat comment."
On Tuesday, Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School District Superintendent C. Lauren Schoen acknowledged the Facebook post in an email to students and faculty.
“Please be advised the district has taken the appropriate actions and precautions in an attempt to ensure the greatest degree of safety and security of our students, faculty and staff. There is no perceived danger at this time,” the email read.
No other students were involved in the incident, Fox said.
