Teenage Girl Shot, Seriously Wounded in NJ While Sitting in Car

A teenage girl was shot and seriously wounded Saturday while sitting in the passenger seat of a car in New Jersey, authorities said.

The victim, identified only as a 17-year-old Clifton resident, was shot in the back. She was hospitalized in critical but stable condition, but further details on her injuries were not disclosed.

The shooting occurred around 2:10 a.m., said Paterson police. It's unclear whether the teen or someone else in the car was targeted by the shooter or if the car was moving or parked when the shooting occurred.

After the shots were fired, the driver drove to a nearby intersection and the victim called for help. The teen apparently was the only person injured in the shooting.

The driver's name has not been released.
